Yes…I’m back in action on the blog, and Gage is back in action playing flag football for the first time. He’s on a team with other 1st grade boys from his school, and he’s absolutely loving it.

He and Avery also play football with makeshift flags many mornings and afternoons in the front yard, as well as playing soccer and, for the first time today, turning the soccer net on its side to use it as a volleyball net. Pretty handy, since Avery is playing soccer and volleyball this fall.
For many parents, these are the routine things of fall. For us, these are things we haven’t been able to do before…three sports just in the fall?!? It’s the normal busy-ness of family life, and it feels so good to have the health and margin in our family to let the kids play sports with their friends and take on the crazy schedule it brings.
As for me back in action on the blog, I’ve been reflecting some about the how, when & why of my posting (or lack of) these days. Several of you have even asked if the ‘radio silence’ means all is well…or that you should be concerned. Good question. And, the answer is: some of both.
All is well: Yes, no unexpected trips to Children’s, Gage is continuing to endure the maintenance part of his protocol as well as could be expected, etc.
Cause for concern: Yes to this too. Only, these days it’s often harder to share what the concerns are. There are the ‘easy to explain’ things like the threat of swine flu and the swirl of emotions, decisions and conflicts it brings… Or the year-long construction on Gage’s school campus and the mold, bacteria & fungus in the dirt that rates an “8 out of 10″ on his oncologist’s scale of concerns…so now the mask-wearing, recess-skipping, carpool-challenging aspects of being outside the school on many days.
And, there are also the other ripples in the cancer pond that are harder to share. They are more subtle and, often, more personal…and, as they often relate to how our kids are personally doing on this journey, the blog doesn’t really seem like the right place to share them as our kids get older. Still, there are an unending number of things I see in our family life each day that “have cancer on them”…things that are different, more complex and harder because of the leukemia…things that require an extra dose of wisdom, flexibility, courage, patience and strength to face.
So, even if, in this season, I can’t always share the particulars of what’s challenging for each of us, rest assured that we still covet your prayers for our family.
And, I know many of you have continued to follow Laurren Smith’s story as well, and I wanted to ask you to continue to pray for her as they have pursued all mainstream treatment without success and are now in Mexico seeking alternative treatment. We love their family, and would love for you to join us in praying for them during this time.
Thanks for checking in and for supporting us, especially as we start another steroid & extra chemo week on Monday. Thanks too for letting me share with you that we still need your prayers even when we can’t share all the details. And, I’ll try to update the blog a bit more too. Just know that behind the fun pictures are still plenty of heavy burdens.
Matthew 11:28
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

R,
I’ve been checking in daily to see if there’s been an update. So good to see pictures of Gage playing flag football. Continuing to pray for you all daily…as well as sweet Laurren…caught her story on channel five this week – what an amazing girl!
We will be praying specifically for Gage this week as he continues this tough protocol and for all of the Holmes clan as you press on in the day to day highs and lows that come your way. We love you all dearly!
L.
I am thankful that you have some normal back in your lives. Gage looks great in the pictures! Love and continued prayers for you all!
Sweet friends–I can completely appreciate and understand the need for privacy and prayers at the same time. Fortunately, God doesn’t need anyone else to know the details! Please know we continue to lift your precious family up in our prayers. As He holds you close, may you feel the nearness of His presence today and always. In HIM–Angie
We haven’t forgotten your struggle….and the Lord surely never will. We are still praying. Actually…this past week both Gray and Garner have mentioned Gage in their prayers at night. I always find it fascinating that they remember a boy, close to their age, that they have never met, that we don’t talk about often. Yet, they remember, unprompted, to pray for him. It is a simple prayer, “Please be with Gage.”
I lift you up for all the unspoken things….for all of the struggles cancer related and not cancer related. I pray that you will be able to continue your witness with grace….and you’ll have peace along the way. My commitment is to pray for you guys all the way through this…and beyond it. Still praying.
Tell Gage…Garner needs a new joke to tell at school.
Rebecca,
Beautifully written…still praying…love to each of you. Carrie
from the looks of these pictures…the power of prayer…at work….will continue praying for Laurren…xo
Hi Holmes family,
How encouraging to hear that you are beginning to take on more challenges of crazy life. God is so good. Praying for His protection over your family as you walk through this year of flus, colds, molds, and fungi. Rebekah and James both have the H1N1 virus right now. I pray that you will be able to come out on the other side and say “God protected our family through this” as rampant as it is.
We continue to pray for you guys and I am thankful we serve a living God who is everywhere all the time. He knows how to translate our prayers into exactly what you need at that very moment. I think of Rebekah when she prays “God please be with Gage RIGHT NOW” I am comforted that He alone knows your needs and can provide for you. Thank you for keeping us updated.
Cindy

Thanks for sharing Rebbeca. Praise God that Gage is running around and playing football. Continuing to pray that the Lord would bring healing to his body. Praying that the Lord would continue to give you and your family the support that you need. Praising the Lord for all that he has already done over the past two years.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures of Gage. Thank you for expressing well the reality of how cancer hits so many different levels…and I think leukemia has a unique punch because the treatment is so long. – We continually get – She is still on treatment? We lift you up in your daily challenges with your sweet family.
I also keep an eye on Laurren and lift her up and am amazed how God’s grace abounds for the family.
Blessings –
Colleen Downey
Thinking of you and praying wisdom and discernment for you on all things known and unknown.

Hello Holmes Family, always a joy to come to the site- get a few updates and see wonderful pics!!! Thanking GOD, Gage is able to play footbal and never forgetting what lies underneath all the fun and smiles and daily challenges you all endure. Praying everyday that GOD is healing Gage’s body and very soon this will all be behind Gage and the family along with all the daily treatments and road trips to Children’s. Praying God will continue to give you all strength, endurance, comfort, hope, and peace today and in the upcoming days! Praying for all your family needs and the challenges you face.
Thank you for always mentioning Laurren and all the prayer warriors that have joined her team. God does answer our prayers and prayers do change our circumstances!! If your schedule allows please join us for Christmas in October for the Smith Family and a good time for Fellowship! There will be lots of fun things for the kiddos, music and a number of other activities! Laurren’s Caring Bridge should be updated soon with more detail. The event is October 25th in Forney.
I’ll check back soon! Have a Blessed Week! We love you guys!

Rebecca –
Last night I was able to hear Aaron Shust in concert and after the signing died down after the concert, I connected eye to eye with him – and thanked him from all the childhood cancer families who are not “skilled to understand what God has brought (?) what God has planned…” It was a unique exchange as there was some sort of deep understanding in his eyes – I don’t know the background of the song.
Anyway, your post of going to church and hearing that song is one that is etched on my heart. Your words and the songs’ words were entwined beautifully.
Prayers for Gage and your family today.
Love, Colleen
